Staying healthy this season, naturally!

So Bear’s cousin got the swine flu, along with many others in her school. When i first heard this my brain immediatly went to “when was the last time we hung out with them?” It had been a week or so so we were in the clear. Why are we so scared of this flu? There are many conspiracies around this flu and i go back and forth on what to believe. Is it government made? , are these all scare tactics?, is it really something to be SCARED of??? Well, my neice got the flu, stayed home sick all week and got better. Just like the normal flu. Go figure. Apparently this Flu is uber contagious as well…well, she has 2 siblings,  and two parents, none of which caught this scary contagious flu. hmmm. So, i have decided not to vaccinate Bear. I don’t get the flu shot and never have given it to Bear, so we aren’t getting this one either. Instead we are boosting our immune systems naturally. We are starting Probiotics and fish oil today.  Probiotics are also great for kids who have been on antibiotics before (bear has not) but nonetheless they are great for all of us to take. check out this link and there are many more out there about probiotics.

Good luck everyone staying healthy!

Thanks so much Lizbear! I am struggling with this as well. Try flaxseed also…does the same a sfih oil but doesn’t have many of the harmful components that fish can have because of water pollution. Both can’t hurt and flaxseed can be hidden in a lot more food. Fish oil is icky tasting.

If you are using the fish oil pills, keep them in the freezer. Then when you take them they don’t release until further down in your tummy and you won’t have that disgusting fish oil taste or burping all day.

thanks for the advice. i have been using cod liver oil for years now. i use the best stuff$ and it’s the liquid i keep in the fridge. bear actually doesn’t mind if believe it or not. i get it from this website where i have also used the GREENS and the VIT C in the past. http://drbenkim.com/

great website liz. I like when I feel like I’m getting advice from a real person rather then a medical journal.

A little bit of advice when taking fish oil capsules and flaxseed:

Fish oil capsules are MUCH nicer when they’re “enteric” coated. This is a coating that slows down the body’s absorption, so you don’t get those nasty, icky burps. I couldn’t take the caps until my doctor’s nurse (it’s always the nurses, isn’t it?) recommended the enteric coating. Now, I have no problems at all. Sometimes they’re marketed as “no burp”.

Flaxseed cannot be digested, in it’s original form, by the body. If you just eat the seeds, they pass through the system, untouched. I purchased an inexpensive coffee grinder and dump the flaxseeds in, and grind them to a fine powder. Sprinkle it on/add it to almost anything.

Thanks Lady Phoenix! Great info about the fish oil pills and ground flaxseeds. I would never have known about the enteric coated pills. Do you have any good websites you find health info on?

yeah great advice. you can also buy flaxseed already ground and keep it in the fridge. if you use it often enough it stays good. also the fish oil in liquid form doesn’t make you burp it up later. i buy carlson’s with lemon in it so it taste better. bear actually takes it every morning too…i chase it with a spoon full of local honey! whatever works!
